About Jill
Jill Thompson has been our Athens County Auditor since 2000. In that role, she serves as the watchdog over county government, and works closely with our towns, cities, school districts, and libraries.
Jill is a lifelong resident of Athens County. She grew up on a farm in Alexander Township, where her family raised cattle and sheep. After graduating from Alexander High School, Jill went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in finance from Ohio University’s College of Business Administration.
Jill also received her master’s in financial economics from Ohio University and was inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for her achievements.
Jill got her start serving our county as Deputy Auditor in 1992. She currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Ohio Council of County Officials. She previously served as President of the Ohio Government Finance Officers Association, as President of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio, and has also served as Chairperson of the Correction Commission of Southeastern Ohio.
As the county’s Chief Fiscal Officer, Jill has used her proven management experience and strong financial and leadership skills to make government more efficient and accountable to the citizens of Athens County.
In addition to her work as Auditor, she currently serves on the Board of the United Seniors of Athens County and is a member of the Athens-Meigs County Farm Bureau where she has previously served on the board. Thompson is active in the business community. She is a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and a friend of the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Jill Thompson resides in Albanyand is the proud mother of three sons: Trent, Lukas, and Seth.
Vision
Jill’s vision is to redefine how local government works. It should be open and efficient, giving citizens confidence that the issues facing their community are being solved.
Jill believes we deserve better than the slow, disorganized services typical of most county and municipal departments. By working across party lines with local leaders, Jill has created one of the most responsive and transparent offices in the state.
Achievements
Jill has made government easier to deal with by adding convenient new technology. She also published Athens County’s first Public Annual Financial Report.
Auditor Thompson played a key role in the development and implementation of a financing model for the regional jail.
To better serve our county, Jill completed the LeanOhio Boot Camp: Transforming the Public Sector in 2014 and passed the Comprehensive Exam for the Fundamentals of Mass Appraisals sponsored by the International Association of Assessing Officers. She is qualified as a Mass Appraisal Project Manager in Ohio.
